If the nylon elbow joint on your Model 90 lamp has broken, removing it can be a little tricky because the original nylon hinge is held in place by a retaining tab inside the arm. This tab is located where you can see a small pressed-in section of metal on the arm, just below the joint.
Unfortunately, the original nylon elbow joint will usually need to be destroyed during removal, but don't worry - replacement joints are available and are designed to be fitted afterwards.
What You'll Need
- Electric drill
- 4mm drill bit suitable for metal
- Safety glasses
- Replacement elbow joint (SKU 10177) - found on our website here
Step 1 – Locate the Retaining Tab
Examine the arm near the elbow joint and look for the small pressed-in section of metal - it is around 6mm from the end of the arm. This indicates the location of the retaining tab that prevents the original hinge from being removed.
Step 2 – Drill Through the Retaining Point
Put on your safety glasses.
Carefully drill through the centre of the pressed-in section of metal. The aim is to remove or weaken the retaining tab that is holding the nylon elbow joint in place.
Take your time and apply gentle pressure to avoid damaging the surrounding arm.
Step 3 – Remove the Broken Elbow Joint
Once the retaining tab has been drilled out, the broken nylon elbow joint should be able to slide or be worked free from the arm.
You may need to use pliers to remove any remaining pieces of the damaged joint, or a tiny flat headed screw driver to lever it out.
Step 4 – Clean the Area
Remove any swarf (metal shavings) or debris created during drilling.
Check that the hole is clear and that the arm is free from any remaining fragments of the old hinge.
Step 5 – Fit the Replacement Joint
The replacement elbow joint is designed to work with a bolt fitting rather than the original retaining tab. The hole you drilled through the arm will be used when installing the new elbow joint and securing it with the supplied bolt.
Important Note
The original elbow joint cannot usually be removed intact because of the internal retaining tab design. It is therefore normal for the old nylon hinge to be damaged during removal. The replacement elbow joint has been specifically designed to overcome this issue and provide a durable repair solution.
